Nina Hunter is a contemporary painter and illustrator whose work examines the feminine as a symbolic influence. A fundamental element of this investigation is the interplay between surface and depth.
Hunter is intrigued by the tension between immediate visual allure and the deeper psychological and symbolic layers beneath it. With beauty serving as a visual anchor, it becomes a portal between inner and outer realms. Within this space, the feminine moves beyond her role as muse or symbol and becomes a living structure of perception and meaning, existing in a state of unresolved balance.
In Hunter’s practice, every painting begins with the careful preparation of hand-stretched raw linen, with each stretcher built specifically for the individual work. This deliberate, often slow, and physical process reflects her belief that the creation of a painting begins with the selection of the right canvas and is inseparable from its final expression.
Born in the coastal city of Sopot, Poland, Hunter earned her Master’s degree in Graphic Design and Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk before establishing her artistic practice in the historic village of Saltaire, West Yorkshire, England.
Now residing in her bohemian home on the banks of the River Aire in Yorkshire, Hunter finds inspiration in the changing seasons and the rhythms of everyday life.
Her paintings have been exhibited throughout the United Kingdom and internationally, including London and New York. Recent exhibitions include SANCTUM, ELYSIUM, the Women in Art Fair, the Hamptons Fine Art Fair, and her solo exhibition thy will be done at the Nina Hunter Gallery & Collectors Lounge, a contemporary gallery she founded in Saltaire.
Today, Hunter divides her time between painting, illustration, and developing her gallery in Saltaire. Her work is held in private collections internationally and continues to attract collectors drawn to its quiet elegance, refined craftsmanship, and timeless sense of place.
Artistic Practice
Drawing upon her own journey of transformation, Hunter's ethereal female figures become expressions of resilience, self-discovery, and inner sovereignty. Through classical compositions and mythological symbolism, these figures inhabit the space between the earthly and the archetypal, inviting viewers to contemplate who we might become in the absence of fear, expectation, and limitation.
