Athena Anastasiou is a contemporary painter whose large-scale works combine realism, abstraction, and innovative textile weaving to create richly layered compositions that challenge the traditional boundaries of painting. Working primarily in oil, she integrates woven threads directly into the canvas, transforming the painted surface into a multidimensional space where painting and textile become one.
Born in London in 1986, Anastasiou studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins before continuing her education at Charles Cecil Studios in Florence and the New York Academy of Art. Today, she lives and works between London and Bali, drawing inspiration from the natural world, mythology, and the interconnected relationship between humanity and the environment.
At the heart of Anastasiou's practice is an exploration of identity, transformation, and regeneration. Her paintings investigate the delicate balance between humanity and nature, reflecting on the Earth's fragile ecosystems while celebrating their resilience. Through vibrant color, expressive abstraction, and figurative imagery, she creates immersive worlds that are both dreamlike and deeply symbolic.
