Alfie Poelsing is a German-English artist-curator based in London. His work transforms personal experiences into visual depictions of memories through traditional painting and digital manipulation of personal photographs.
His work aims to create a glimpse into his experiences through honest communication of his emotions, often titling his works phrases or metaphors which reveal fragments of the anecdotes his works are charged by.
Currently living in London, Poelsing finds inspiration through photographs of both outdoor and indoor environments, taken during walks through the city or times of rest or contemplation.
His work has been exhibited throughout the UK, notably in locations such as the Scarlett Green Restaurant in Soho and The Other House Hotel in South Kensington. Poelsing continues to exhibit in London and is soon making his debut in the US in both New York and Los Angeles.
Poelsing’s early work heavily features hands as an independent symbol, detached from a body, roaming in abstract environments as if lost and wild. These works parallel the artist’s life at the beginning of his career, sharing stories of undirected freedom, confusion, and a longing for connection.
Currently studying Art History with Curating at Birkbeck, University of London, Poelsing continues to develop his artistic practice alongside his work as a freelance curator in London. The shows he develops engage with other emerging artists, building a separate platform from traditional gallery routes for artists just beginning their careers who lack opportunities. Through this, he also features his own work in curated exhibitions in the capital, sharing his process and advice to other artists and aspiring curators on social media.
Artistic Practice
“It starts with a photograph. There are no rules for a photograph's eligibility in terms of aesthetics, but I must be able to feel something when I am looking at it. I then digitally alter this photograph by experimenting in Photopea - a sometimes short, sometimes long process where I chip away until I find a composition I like. A lot of my compositions are scrapped at this stage, as they fail to evoke that 'glimpse into a memory' that I am looking for. Some of these are revisited, some I never touch again. The ones that make it through are then prepared for print or to be painted.”
